{"id":42,"date":"2007-05-20T21:02:52","date_gmt":"2007-05-20T21:02:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mrmaher.wordpress.com\/2007\/05\/20\/the-drive-for-lifelong-learning\/"},"modified":"2023-02-22T22:27:26","modified_gmt":"2023-02-22T22:27:26","slug":"the-drive-for-lifelong-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/infinitude.maherpages.net\/index.php\/2007\/05\/20\/the-drive-for-lifelong-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"The Drive to Lifelong Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<table style=\"width:100%;\" border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"1\" cellspacing=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width:50%;\"><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\">Believe it or not, there\u2019s something good about a 48-mile (one way) commute.<span>  <\/span>It may not offset the hit on the wallet from gas prices or the hit on the schedule from a 10 hour a week part time job driving, but it does provide one tangible benefit, it provides more time to learn.<\/font><\/td>\n<td style=\"width:50%;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mrmaher.files.wordpress.com\/2007\/05\/route-78.gif\" title=\"Route 78\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/mrmaher.files.wordpress.com\/2007\/05\/route-78.gif\" alt=\"Route 78\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"> My dad commuted from East Brunswick to West Orange, New Jersey for more then twenty years, and he could only listen to what AM and FM radio had to offer.<span>  <\/span>Nothing but pop music or news stations and talk show pabulum punctuated by almost constant commercials.<span>  <\/span>He had found an obscure station that broadcast only classical music (WNCN), which was a rarity in the seventies.<span>  <\/span>With the new age of information, not only can I listen to exactly what I want, but I can \u201cattend\u201d the most prestigious universities and professional conferences in the world.<span>  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\">I can listen <a href=\"http:\/\/connect.educause.edu\/blog\/carie417\/educause2006_podcast_information_fluency\/23729\">Charles Dziuban talk about the University of Central Florida\u2019s Information Fluency<\/a> initiative at the 2006 EDUCAUSE Annual Conference, or catch up on the latest web tools from the folks at <a href=\"http:\/\/edtechtalk.com\/\">EdtechTalk<\/a>.<span>  <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.educause.edu\/\">Educause<\/a> has hundreds of audio files from conferences and EdtechTalk has an archive of four main programs from its grassroots community of education professionals. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\">If I\u2019m in a introspective mood I can listen to Harvard Psychologist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/index.php\/talks\/view\/id\/97\">Dan Gilbert<\/a> explain his concept of &#8220;synthetic happiness&#8221; in 21 minutes at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/\">TED Conference<\/a>.<span>  <\/span>If I want to follow that path a little further, I\u2019ll listen to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peterkreeft.com\/audio.htm\">Peter Kreeft<\/a>, a professor of philosophy at Boston College, whose Catholic wedge of philosophy takes more than a couple listens to sink in.<span><\/span><span>  <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"> Preparation for AP European and AP US classes this year would not have been complete without attending a class at UC Berkley on the way to school.<span> <a href=\"http:\/\/webcast.berkeley.edu\/course_details.php?seriesid=1906978305\">Thomas W. Laqueur&#8217;s European Civilization<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/webcast.berkeley.edu\/course_details.php?seriesid=1906978276\">Jennifer Burns US History<\/a>, both provided the insight of a different <\/span>perspective and the synthesis of a survey course.<span>  <\/span>On specific events and issues, Melvyn Bragg from BBC 4\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/radio4\/history\/inourtime\/\">In Our Time<\/a> are just now escaping the Read Audio straightjacket and offering MP3 downloads of their shows.<span>  <\/span>And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dancarlin.com\/\">Dan Carlin\u2019s Hardcore History<\/a> is well written and well produced.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"> It is not uncommon to find lists of educational audio, here are my suggestions for the best chance for an intellectual drive to work: <\/font><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/edtechtalk.com\/\"><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\">EdTechTalk &#8211;<\/font><\/a><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\">Simply the best place to start, a must for every teacher who wants to remain relevant.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/\">TED<\/a> \u2013 Ideas worth Spreading \u2013 the best thinkers and doers across the spectrum of disciplines and industries, yet all have to make their point in under twenty minutes<\/font><\/p>\n<p><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"> <\/font><!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;ct=res&amp;cd=1&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.educause.edu%2F&amp;ei=R7ZQRp2_D4eSgAT4tfSXDQ&amp;usg=AFrqEzeJzNe8u-X2_K8gNCUALGopL2Y93g&amp;sig2=Pz1hRaS6fqAc2z47fQUkbQ\">Educause<\/a> \u2013<\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/connect.educause.edu\/taxonomy\/term\/691\/0\">Conference Coverage<\/a> \u2013 You may not get the frequent flyer miles, but you can attend a conference every day with this audio archive.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/connect.educause.edu\/folksonomy\/educause_pocket_edition\">Pocket Edition<\/a> \u2013Hosted by the \u201cClick and Clack\u201d of instructional technology, this is a catalog of quick explanations of tech tools and web sites.<span>  <\/span>Even if you already make podcasts and use wiki\u2019s and blogs in the classroom, you never know when you\u2019ll find another ingenious way to use them.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/k12onlineconference.org\/\">K12 online conference<\/a> &#8211; A catalog of great presentations ranging from the latest in professional development, to strategies to overcome obstacles in your school.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsa.org.uk\/audio\/\">The Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsa.org.uk\/audio\/\"> <\/a>-Sort of like TED, but the presentations are much longer and inquiry much deeper, several panel discussions spanning a range of subjects, most involving current affairs.<\/font><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><\/p>\n<p><!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/forum.wgbh.org\/wgbh\/\"><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\">WGBH <\/font><\/a><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\">&#8211; <\/font><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\">just good stuff<\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/forum.wgbh.org\/wgbh\/\"><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"> <\/font><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/americanradioworks.publicradio.org\/podcast.html\">American Radioworks &#8211;<\/a><\/font><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\">I\u2019ve found at least half a dozen lesson plans here, from a AP Euro lesson that focuses on the <a href=\"http:\/\/americanradioworks.publicradio.org\/features\/stalin\/\">destalinization speech of Nikita Khrushchev<\/a> to an APUS lesson on <a href=\"http:\/\/americanradioworks.publicradio.org\/features\/prestapes\/\">presidential tapes<\/a>. <\/font><\/p>\n<p><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/webcast.berkeley.edu\/course_feeds.php\"><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\">UC Berkeley &#8211; <\/font><\/a><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\">Why not have the students get their content from UC Berkeley, your class becomes a seminar.<span>  <\/span>Don\u2019t forget to check the previous semesters for other courses.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\"> <\/font><!--[endif]--><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"arial,helvetica,sans-serif\" size=\"2\">Although it sometimes seems that I spend my life on Route 78, it is not at all time lost, it is just another opportunity for lifelong learning.<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Believe it or not, there\u2019s something good about a 48-mile (one way) commute.
